38: A Solo Stand-up Special by Karki Ji

On August 8, I’ll be standing on stage to perform my first-ever stand-up comedy special: 38.

Why 38? Because by the time I hit that stage, I’ll be 38 years and exactly 6 days old. In that short time, I’ve already lived a few different lives:

• Marriage and Family: I’ll be sharing the about my marriage, life with my wife, and what it’s like raising daughters in a world still navigating gender bias.

• The IT Life: I spent years as an IT Professional, climbing all the way to the top as a CEO, only to realize the view from the executive suite was mostly just endless email threads.

• Early Retirement: I “retired” early which is just a fancy way of saying I’m now a Retired Chief, professionally unemployed, and constantly tired.

• System Errors: My body has started sending me “System Error” messages. From BP and cholesterol to anxiety, that I can no longer ignore.

• The Reboot: This journey has led me from the boardroom to the Happy Club stage. I’ve dedicated my post-corporate life to building a home for comedy, a stage for open mics, endless laughter, and unforgettable moments. The journey has been anything but ordinary.

This special isn’t just a set of jokes; it’s just me and my thoughts on how I got here. There will be no host to warm you up and no opening act to set the mood; it is just me and 38 years of baggage.

I’ve been working on these stories behind the scenes, and now the countdown is officially on. I’m nervous, I’m retired, and I’m definitely going to be 38. See you there.
